To read a hole

Learn to read a hole.

Reading a hole is the study of the grass, trees, contour, and position of the green, direction of the wind or anything else which can affect play. Planning in advance how each hole will be played can save shots.

Top players will look over a course with practiced eyes and tell you within a stroke or two what the winning score will be at the end of 18 or 72 holes. The score they cite may not be the one they post, but they realize what must be done.

Halving and quartering greens. When playing into a difficult pin placement you can mentally divide the green into halves and if needed quarters.  A definite and positive picture of the required shot to be played presents itself as the pin will be in one half and specifically in one half or quarter.
