Tapering

Tapering is another form of training. It is a term usually associated with swimming and horse racing, but it is very effective when used for golf. The essential idea is to start out several months out from a special event, say the club championship. In this month some heavy practice is maintained, for example 3 sessions of 200 balls per week.

The next month this is reduced to 3 sessions of 100 balls per week. The final month consists of 3 sessions of 50 balls per week. Then in the final week before the event 3 sessions of only 20 balls each. At the end of tapering you should achieve a state of alertness, relaxation and confidence in your ability.

Olympians’ use this technique from a starting point of 2 or 3 years out. The science of tapering can be conducted to enable the athlete to peak in ability on any particular day of choice.
