Like throwing a ball

Like throwing a ball, simple for some.

It can be useful to associate the golf swing with other activities like throwing a ball. Here lies a huge problem. The number of people who have either forgotten how to, or have tightened up so much that they no longer can throw are in numbers a-plenty. For these people their golf has become as uncoordinated and static as their throwing attempts. It is time to get away from this frustration.

For these situations I go very slowly in swing mechanics and apply to them an understanding on how the body works in unison with itself. I emphasise that there is no static in movement and therefore require you to keep the muscles and joints to be free in motion. It helps to consider never applying your full strength to any shot.

Lesson (1) What you do with one hand at a time; the right hand forehand or the left hand backhand, you need to do as close to that when you use both arms at the same time.

Lesson (2) Learn timing and coordination of the legs and arms moving in unison with one another.

Lesson (3) The elbow and shoulder joint move in time in all activities. In throwing some object the elbow bends and the shoulder joint does the swinging.

Lesson (4) In turning the body away the shoulders turn but you do not turn your shoulders. The upper-body has been turned by the lower-body. For example the right hip going back takes the shoulders around.

Put these things together and you should feel movement from these actions. There should be enough coordination to throw a ball a fair distance easily. With a little application you could apply this movement to a chip, then a pitch, and then for a full iron shot.

Coaching is all about improving your golf no matter what your age or present standard. Golf should be fun and enjoyable otherwise why play golf at all. Therefore my work as your coach relies on injecting new things and new ideas (like the wording above) to get you up to speed. These are lessons or exercises for everybody.
