Dedication

Alwaysgolf.com.au is Dedicated to the Memory of                                                       Mr. (Thomas) Jack Coogan PGA

1959 was the first year in which the Australian Amateur was held separately from the Open, and the title Australian Medallist was introduced for the leading Amateur. Jack Coogans’ name is the first on the illustrious list of winners.

Between 1952 and 1959, Jack represented Australia four times overseas and once in Australia.  When touring New Zealand with the 1952 National team, he was third in the New Zealand Open.

His Australian honours include representation in the Eisenhower Cup and Commonwealth Cup teams which toured England, America and South Africa on separate tours.

Jack was leading amateur in the 1953 Open at Gailes and he and his brother, Dick Coogan, won the Australian Foursomes at Lake Karrinyup, Perth, in 1952. It was in this event that Dick hit one so far at the eighteenth that the club erected a plaque to mark the distance.

Dick Coogan is equally well known throughout Australia from his many interstate tours with the Queensland team over twenty-four years.

From 1953 to 1961 Jack Coogan won the Queensland Championship Cup in 1953, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961.

He played matches and finals against a the likes of 19 yo Jack Nicklaus USA, Randal Vines AU, Bruce Devlin AU, Harry Weetman GB.

I completed my PGA apprenticeship under Jack Coogans’ guidance and have appreciated his advice on ‘how to’ in golf to this day.
Thankyou Mr. Coogan
